Addiction is a coping skill, used to help people cope with feelings and emotions that are uncomfortable or unbearable.
An addiction is not the problem, it's a symptom of an underlying problem. Much like a bandaid, an addiction helps to cover up what's underneath.
The link between addiction and mental health, including trauma, is so strong it is nearly impossible to treat one without addressing the others.
Addiction knows no face; it is not limited by gender, race, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, cultural background, socioeconomic status... it can happen to anyone.
There are many types of addictions: substance abuse, gambling, sex, shopping, internet, gaming, etc. While each is unique, they share commonalities and can be treated similarly.
Addiction knows no bounds; everyone in the persons life is affected, not just the person themselves. It is important to seek support whether it is you who is struggling with an addiction or someone you care about.
